Predator skin colors by merrypaws Predator skin colors by merrypaws
A bunch of skin color/pattern studies, done just because. I've had predators on my mind lately, so I decided to roll with it. More fun that way than trying to move to other things when the muse won't agree.

I know I've set myself up for blue million 'dat ass'-comments with this, but I suppose it was coming sooner or later.

I'm a traditional animator so, when someone mentions texture or patterns, my immediate reaction is HAHAHAHAHAHAHA no, absolutely not. However, this is is really interesting. You made me want to up my game since all my predators are so boring by comparison!

I know. I've tried my hand at comics, so I have some idea of what a pain it can be to draw the same character over and over again while trying to keep everything consistent. Animating... gah! Don't even want to think about that.
Pretty, detailed things are best saved for individual pictures.

No kidding. But it's still fun to see nice things like this!

Oddly enough, while the topmost left & middle right skins look more than film-plausible to my eye, I'm seriously digging the middle left's ocelot motif. Some felines just have the market cornered on camo & style. Not that either green-striped variant is exactly hard on the eyes...well, harder than usual for Preds.

Pointless tangent: was that Aliens/Pony fic worth your while?

Definitely yes, thank you. I haven't finished it yet, but I fully intend to. At first I balked a little at seeing blood and gore in a pony fic, but later on I found myself giggling out loud at several turns. ("Scuttles", phfffft. :XD:)

Well, no hurry-the fic itself is still in progress, and the author admits his rate of update is "glacial."

I don't mind fics with a bit of extra edge, whatever the franchise involved, but there's a fine balance 'tween effective use of life-or-death struggles and, well, torture pr0n. Perhaps that's why I can stomach AvPonies, but have no clue how "Cupcakes" and its imitators became a meme du jour.

Amen to that. The less there is any violence in the show canon, the more jarring even a little bit of it is. Some people seem to enjoy pushing the contrast as far as they can, but that's not my slice of apple pie, thanks.

Funny thing is, there's plenty of creature-feature action in MLP...for the purposes of that crossover, Scuttles & its brethren are just markedly nastier than the Equestrian norm. For what it's worth, I've always preferred lethal beasties to plot-omnipotent slashers.

Very impressive. :) A bit too colourful for my taste because I usually try to keep my Yautja in natural colourls like brown, sand, beige, black, muddy or olive green, and auburn. (There are a few exceptions tho, of course.)
Anyway, great work! Very creative! :)

Thank you. I was mostly going for variety rather than realism, just to see what works. Personally, yeah, the green and bluish ones are a bit too much even in my mind.

I actually significantly toned down some of the patterns I came across while doing research on reptiles. (I dare you, do a Google image search with words 'colorful snake'. I was hard-pressed to believe some of those pictures were real.)
