MLP - Cotton 'n Greg in the rain by merrypaws MLP - Cotton 'n Greg in the rain by merrypaws
Inspired by the famous wet-mane scene from episode 'Sisterhooves Social'. And oh look, Cotton's not a blank flank anymore! Her full name is now Cotton Patch. She's a seamstress, not the fancy design-y type like Rarity, but the kind you take your favorite winter coat to when you pull a seam or something like that. She specializes on fixing things.

This makes me happy for some reason. Cotton looks so pretty, and Greg looks so ridiculously smitten.

Sketched on train, inked in art history class.

Greg stared out at Cotton from beneath the porch. He wasn't entirely sure why Cotton loved the rain so much. He guessed this was because Most of his experience with it had had negative connotations. In the tunnels, the feel of water could be your only sign of an oncoming flood or cave-in. In the Badlands, it meant flash floods, mudslides, and the horric combination of heat and humidity.
The only reason he couldn't hate it was that the feel of it reminded him he was no longer inside the clostrophobic tunnels of the hive.
Of course, right now, he wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing.
There was no way to tell time in the tunnels (though he suspects there used to be), so he was still unable to read any clock or calender. According to Cotton, he had only been back for three weeks. She had then tried to explain what weeks were. Then days. She gave up when it came to seconds and told him he would get used to it.
What it all came down to was that he hadn't been back that long. He had left the new hive on his own terms, nobody there would even know he was gone.
So why did he miss it?
He knew it was stupid, but some part of him still couldn't see anything other than an evil monster whenever he looked in a mirror. It screamed that he had no part in this world, that he should just go back from whence he came. That voice just keept talking in the back of his mind, and almost nothing would shut it up.
Almost nothing.
Cotton had become his constant in life. Looking at her sitting in the rain reminded him that going back to the hive meant leaving her again.
And that was NOT acceptable.
Greg stepped out from under the porch and into the downpour. Cotton always seemed so confident, just sitting out in the rain. Like she could handle any problem that came her way.
If she could withstand the storm, it shouldn't bother her if he sat with her. And maybe, just maybe, the rain would wash him clean as well.

Cotton sat down in the center of a rain puddle. The clouds above her yard covered the sky as a soaked, oyster quilt. This storm had not come from any cloud factory, but formed on their own over the enchanted Everfree.
She felt the water flow down her pelt, soaking warmly into her skin. She loved this kind of rain. It always felt as if it washed her very soul from the worries and problems the world bore down on her.
It was unbelievable how much had changed for her within a few months. A changeling for a boyfriend, keeping him from being found out, being attacked by other changelings...
She was really, REALLY glad for this rain.
Despite the newfound insanity of her life, there were still so many things to lighten the load. Her quilting repair was still holding out. Her boyfriend had returned to her, and the town hadn't been freaking out about "unconfirmed sightings of changeling infiltration" anymore. Thanks, in no small part, to the local reports of a kind of changeling guardian.
And, of course, there was the rain. That eternal renewal, bringing hope for a better future.
Cotton Patch gave a content sigh. How she loved the rain.

Let me rephrase that. As a tunnel worker, Greg would have little to no direct experience with rain, outside of tunnel leaks and flooding. As a soldier, he would have a little more exposure since soldiers must go outside more often, but would judge it as to how it effects his people. An infiltrator would be around it the most, and would probably like/dislike the rain for similar reasons as ponies do.

In my headcanon, there are no designated roles in the changeling society. The common workers are just shifted to whatever task they're needed at at the time. (Again with the anonymity of the changeling society. You're not a 'tunneler' or 'builder' or 'soldier'. Until you distinguish yourself and rise to an officer, you're just a faceless minion, who does whatever they're told to.)
Greg's probably done all those tasks at one point or another. He'd most likely prefer the infiltration missions tho, if only because he got to see the outside world and escape the monotony of the hive.

So Chrysalis basically forced the hive to be a bunch of replaceable cogs, if I'm understanding correctly. So some of that programming was what likely caused Greg to go back, and his desire for the newfound freedom made him leave again. I'm going to say my scenario is about a moth after his return, so his internal conflict would likely still be around, albeit subtly.
And if being a drone equates to being a nobody, it is rather interesting that he has a name at all. Though that depends on your headcanon.
So he dislikes the monotony of the hive, still has some doubts about leaving it, and has a name in a society that I'm assuming oppresses individuality...
I think I have an idea on how he would see rain. :)

Having a little trouble with Greg's view. What was his role with the changelings? If he was working in the tunnels, the feel of water might be worrisome to him. If he was a soldier, he might relate it to crawling through mud. If he was an infiltrator, he could relate to Cotton's feelings.

I know this phrase is overused, but it is always true. This is still a better love story then Twilight.

(Abomination of a series of novels is what they are)

Cotton and Greg, I wish you many more happy years of love and harmony. :)

I wonder how this happy couple would take to meeting Shining and Cadence....

Realistically, it would probably be a moment of freak out on both sides. Shining Armor and Cadence, well, a CHANGELING. And Greg, lets just say that if Twilight was kicking changeling flank left and right, I doubt he would be too keen on meeting her big brother, who has every reason to be suspicious of anything to do with changelings.

But, if they actually managed to get over the bad first impressions on both sides, then they might get along. I like to think that somewhere deep down Greg and Shining really have a lot in common.

Fluttershy, yeah, I could see that. Though I think Princess Luna would also fit the bill, what with her being associated with the night and dreams and all such darker things that may be a little scary, but not really that bad.

I think poor Greg would be even more scared of Luna than he is of Shining. XD

Greg: "Oh... h-hello, Y-y-your Highness..." (under his breath) "Oh please don't banish me, please don't banish me, please don't banish me.." D:

Luna would most likely remind him at least somewhat of Chrysalis. He'd probably slip a few times and call her 'My Queen' or something like that, which Luna would find both confusing and kind of flattering.

It'd probably take Cotton to help him break the habit. XD
("Greg, sweetie; that's Luna, not...you-know-who.)

Or maybe Luna herself! She comes into Greg's dream, concerned about his apparent fear of her, and the two eventually chat.

Could I get a vector/png of Cotton's cutie mark? I'm making emblems for my favorite ponies, and I would like to make one for Cotton and one for Greg. Greg I think I will be able to use the heart from the original comic (though I may need to recreate it if it isn't large enough...) and D'awwww...I just noticed that all of the puddles are shaped like hearts.... so cute!!

any size that is at least 1000 pixels wide and tall, since all of my emblems are that size. If it is 1000 I can shrink it/increase it as I need to without much trouble.

More happy things need to occur (or at least be portrayed) in the rain, 'cause those lurve-puddles are ludicrously cute. Plus, props for a clever alternative spin on Equestria's answer to incubi/succubi...freely-dispensed affection might or might not prove more nourishing than the brainwash-induced variety, but it sure doesn't hurt interspecies relations.

Completely random thought: Queen(s) aside, are rank-and-file Changelings exclusively male, or just not all that sexually dimorphic when uncloaked? I've stumbled across plenty of Changeling royalty OCs, but most of the fanon 'drones' seem either male or gender-neutral.

Ah, and speaking of dark chitinous things: that Alien vs. Pony fic finally seems to have wrapped up-and while the bodycount didn't rise much further, things took a patently unexpected turn. [link] Check it out as time allows, and apologies for my pathetic case of commentator's block.

I believe this calls for some "All you need is love, love..."

I kinda figure that the regular changelings, the 'workers' for the lack of better word, can be either male or female, they just aren't physically all that different. Also, if we go with the insect analogy, one might expect that there are different roles the workers can play in a hive, so it might be that the females are more involved with maintaining the hive while the bigger, more aggressive males act as guards and protectors. In my headcanon that explains why Chrysalis' infiltration force consisted mostly of apparently-male changelings.

And I've read the Alien vs. Pony fic already. Much love for little Scuttles. <3

May Scuttles II's journey be long, joyous and (mostly) acid-spray free...and may that Yautja who ganked Scuttles I not cotton onto the loose end Our Littlest Xeno(R) represents.

As for Chrysalis' force being primarily stallion-equivalent raiders...works for me. Especially in light of the hilarious thumping they took from Our Heroines(C) before sheer weight of numbers decided things. Sure made short (albeit mostly off-panel) shrift of the regular Guard, though.

Two further chestnuts:

(1) Given the sort of 'lone wolf' work that seducing & psi-vamping off a host (or more) entails, I have to wonder how dependent individual Changeling adults are upon the hive structure. Perhaps their primary purpose beyond self-sustenance involves 'tanking' up on excess mojo to keep the hive tenders, nymphs & Queen happy.

(2) Another indirect head-scratcher: can solo workers/warriors/whatnot reproduce (be it with their own, or other interested parties), or might that be a Queenly duty?
Reply
:iconmerrypaws:
merrypaws Featured By Owner Oct 27, 2012
1) That sounds just about right for me. I figure individual changelings can do well enough alone, but in groups they can build a larger reserve of energy, so to speak.

2) The idea of the queen being the only one to reproduce just doesn't seem logical in this context. Mostly because, let's face it, having enough babies to populate a hive in a relatively short time does require some anatomical attributes which Chrysalis obviously doesn't have. Besides, the idea of all the changelings being Chrysalis' children makes me shudder. Just a little.
I think that in this area changelings work the same as ponies. The queen only reproduces to continue the royal line, and the workers produce more workers. Though I imagine they don't often form the same type of family units as ponies do. Young changelings are propably aware of who their sire and carrier are, but the actual upbringing is more of a communal job.

Fair enough when it comes to the squick factor & impracticality of one-'mare' swarm production. Plus, the communal angle is vaguely insectoid without overplaying the parallels, since Changelings clearly aren't total organic automatons. Which of course brings us full-circle to Equestria's latest Odd Couple(R).

Ooh, fun thought: Greg taking cover beneath Cotton from a pair of overzealous dracopony Guard wannabes.
